一個昆蟲學家（岡田英次 飾）在沙漠做野外考察，卻不慎錯過歸程班車，被困在一個沙漠中的小村子里。他落腳在一個寡婦（岸田今日子 飾）家，被招待之后發現通往外界的路已經被封住。他慢慢觀察村子的各種古怪，比如全部村民每到夜晚都要出動鏟沙，以免居住的房屋被沙子埋掉，所有的水都受到管制，實行配給制使用等。收留他的寡婦開始用身體誘惑他，試圖和他重組一個家庭，他幾次三番嘗試逃走都以失敗告終，只好表面上虛與委蛇，進入村子定期勞動、享受配給的生活模式，但他內心始終在做逃走的打算。一日，寡婦突發急病，被醫生診斷為意外懷孕，大家手忙腳亂帶她去送醫，男人終于有了千載難逢的逃走機會

Ay?e, Ali, Mehmet and Zeynep are middle-class millennials struggling to make ends meet in Istanbul. Either still living with their parents or hardly getting by without help from their families, they are all beset by similar woes: money crunch, joblessness, social isolation. In view of the world’s horrors that Zeynep enumerates in her diary entries, these are minor problems, ‘slight disasters’, but they are all-consuming, at least to the extent of making them cry in the still of the night. 　　However, Umut Subasi’s first feature, Almost Entirely a Slight Disaster, is not a melodrama. With an appealingly light touch, it diagnoses the malaise of a generation that has run up against a dead end, one whose future prospects are indistinguishable from a game of chance. This is a world where astrology, the lottery and online personality tests compete with visa and job applications as life-shaping elements. 　　Fittingly, the film is structured around chance and coincidence, with its handful of characters encountering each other in every permutation, as though there were no world outside this small social bubble.
