影片記述了“敦煌女兒”，國家榮譽稱號獲得者樊錦詩堅守大漠，守護世界寶藏莫高窟的壯麗人生故事。 扎根敦煌五十余載，樊錦詩（陳瑾 飾）與敦煌研究院的同事們一起，孤獨的與西北的漫天風沙搏斗，搶救和保護莫高窟內的每一件文物; “絕不能讓莫高窟在我們這一代里傳沒了!”時光步入千禧年，面對浩蕩襲來的市場化浪潮與來自四面八方的游客，樊錦詩卻赫然發現，原來對莫高窟內國寶威脅最大的，從來都不只是自然環境，而是叵測的人心......在年過花甲后，她必須要走出自己埋頭苦干一輩子的“洞子”了……
