　　故事發生在一間專門面向歌劇退休演員開放的養老院里，維爾福（比利·康諾利 Billy Connolly 飾）、雷吉（湯姆·康特奈 Tom Courtenay 飾）和茜茜（寶林·科林斯 Pauline Collins 飾）是那里的明星居民。每一年，這三個出色的演唱者都會通過他們的三重唱向社會募集資金，用以維持養老院的運作。雖然養老院的規模不大，但每一個老人都能在那里找到快樂和安寧。　　簡（瑪吉·史密斯 Maggie Smith 飾）的出現打破了眾人寧靜的生活，這個高傲又好斗的女人是歌劇界名聲大噪的歌唱家，同時，她還是雷吉的前妻。受生活所迫，簡不得已住進了這間養老院，前夫雷吉的存在更是讓她心中憤憤不平。由于簡的加入，三重唱變成了四重唱，但排練的效果并沒有因為一個得力唱匠的加入而有所提高，麻煩和爭執接踵而至。
