All goes well initially. Renting an apartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing complex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with open arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present.　　Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.

　　1930年代，小云、小紅（周璇）姐妹被人騙到上海賣給琴師和妓院老鴇夫婦，小云被迫做了暗娼，小紅年紀尚小，又天生有一副好嗓子，便隨琴師去茶樓終日賣唱。姐妹兩人住在貧民窟，在她們對面，住的分別是報販老王和吹鼓手陳少平（趙丹）。因為閑來無事時陳少平常同小紅對窗玩鬧，兩人漸生感情。　　小紅賣唱時被流氓古成龍纏上，對方欲強霸她為妾，小紅找陳少平商量對策，兩人本想借助律師將正義伸張，不想律師雙眼只認錢，無奈之下只得逃走，而這一過程中，老王對小云由憐生愛，可是小云卻因自卑不敢正視。琴師偶知陳少平與小紅下落，放風給古成龍，古成龍趕到小紅住處時，屋里只有她和小云，兩人生命危在旦夕。
